
Dr. Ettala graduated from the University of Turku medical school in 2006 and completed his Ph.D. studies, “Erectile Dysfunction in Cardiovascular Risk Subjects,” at the University of Turku in 2015. He began his surgical residency at Satakunta Central Hospital in 2009 and obtained his specialist certification in urology at the University of Turku in 2016. He was subsequently appointed as a Fellow of the European Board of Urology in 2016.
Dr. Ettala currently serves as a clinical lecturer in urology at the University of Turku, Department of Clinical Medicine, and practices as a urologist at Turku University Hospital, Department of Urology, Finland, since 2016. From 2018 to 2020, he was affiliated with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, where he served as a group leader for a national pilot program focused on prostate cancer care quality. He also served as a deputy member of the Finnish Prostate Cancer Association (Suomen eturauhassyöpäyhdistys in Finnish) from 2018 to 2023 and currently holds a deputy member position on the Directorate of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Turku. In 2020, he was awarded the title of docent at Turku University Hospital.
In his clinical work, Dr. Ettala focuses on all aspects of prostate cancer care, both inpatient and outpatient. His research interests include cancer imaging and big data. He currently serves as a Principal Investigator (PI) on several pharmaceutical-sponsored and academic trials and is actively involved in developing the OMOP network for real-world evidence studies in cancer. He collaborates closely with researchers in the FinOMOP and OHDSI communities and maintains a broad national and international network of colleagues in cancer imaging. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications.
